Assignment Week #3 Pt. 2

"Digital technologies have transformed how and what young people create."

Technology has created easy tools and resources, putting the most useful information at our fingertips. Digital natives are the young people who grew up with the Web. They have transformed their education and learning, the way they make and maintain friendships, how they spend their leisure time, and their engagement with wider society. As the generation who's been watching the progress of digital age, how and what we were able to create was certainly very different.

"Because social learning networks are relatively new and understudied spaces, we don’t
know whether they can or do support self-directed arts learning."

Art learning is a process that requires sensibility and connections. We learn art through smell, taste, vision, hearing and many other different ways. Being able to connect our experience and engage it with different materials for expression would be the key for making art. Thus I doubt self-directed arts learning could be done with social learning networks.

Assignment Week #2 pt. 2

I've always been glued to my phone and I've become too dependent on it. So last weekend, as per assignment, I decided to stay away from my phone for a night. Unfortunately, the first couple hours were extremely rough for me. I felt myself becoming so bored without any instant information and entertainment that I usually had access to, and slight anxiety kicked in after a while as my wallet, my keys and the phone were three necessities carried with me all the time. Netflix distracted me from that blind panic for a little bit but I still couldn't help to look up on the clock to check how much time was left for this tough experiment to finish. I managed to calm myself down after a while and as time went by a sense of peace began to roll in. I started to notice all these sound in my apartment that I never noticed before: the steps my dogs were taking on the floor; the kids who were playing in the courtyard; the talk my neighbors were having, as well as the sound my AC was making.  I was able to relax myself and think of things to do. I became quite domestic and started doing all the house chores that's left from the weekend before, and I was able to finish all of them effectively. Later I decided to work on the potty-training for my new puppy since I'd been trying for weeks yet no satisfying outcome. Interesting enough I was able to catch him in action a couple times within that night. So I called the session a success. I did feel more relaxed after and almost started to enjoy it, but closed to the end of the experiment, I failed to persist and turned on the phone before my night ended.

Assignment #1 Takeaways on Douglas Rushkoff's Program or Be Programmed

#1 If anything, because our conversations were asynchronous, we had the luxury of deeplyconsidering what we said. The net became a place for doing the kind of deliberation and contemplation that couldn’t happen in the harried real world of jobs, kids, and automobiles.

It is an interesting point of view as lots of us today may see asynchrony online in a totally opposite way.  What used to be the luxury has become the new normal.  In this digital era, the advantages of the internet could certainly go both ways. We often enjoy more about immediacy and convenience instead of the deliberation and contemplation that Internet offers. Lots of people even misuse the convenience to harm others with their instant irresponsible response.

#2 Recognizing the biases of the technologies we bring into our lives is really the only way to stay aware of the ways we are changing in order to accommodate them, and to gauge whether we are happy with that arrangement.

It reminds me of the consistent debate of wether internet is good or bad. Essentially, it raises the question: should we let technology lead our way or we should take the control and direct technology? The relationship between human and technology is very interesting, and hopefully I'll gain some insights about it when I finish the book.

Assignments #1 Iris van Herpen

Iris van Herpen is a Dutch fashion designer who is widely recognized as one of forward-thinking designers in fashion. She's one of the very first designers who incorporates 3D-printing in the garment construction and has been using the technology throughout her collections.

Iris believes fashion is not just a functional and devoid of content or commercial; fashion is also an artistic expression. She has a team of approximately 20 people including those who do the hand-work, experiments, and the laser work as well as the people who work on the computer files and technical drawings. The process starts with fabrics being laid into a 3D printer that prints different materials at the same time. The dress can be printed directly onto some fabrics as thin as 0.8mm to create the optimal softness. Some materials like resin are used and experimented alternatively to create variations in colors and transparency on the garment.  All parts from a final garment often take days to print.
